MELANIE FROME CONSULTING

WTF is Fractional Operations?

That time I had to ask WTF is Fractional, and how it led me to discover my ‘function”😉

For three years, “Business Consulting” or “Solutions” has been my go-to answer when asked what I do. It was broad enough to cover the array of services I offered—strategic planning, project management, operations optimization. Not long ago, I realized I had been in a more specific role: Fractional Director of Operations. It came out of the blue to be honest. It was during an online mastermind webinar with some pretty business savvy humans. I had been asked to talk about the last three years of work. Someone else piped up with the “Oh, you mean a Fractional Director, that’s cool.” So, if you pardon my tongue-in-cheek, I had to ask—WTF is Fractional?

From Research Rabbit Holes to the Proverbial Lightbulb moment: Fractional Operations Discovered

Well, that sent me into fact-finding mode. Articles. Big Corporations. Former COO’s (mostly retirement age). Wasn’t exactly giving me confidence that this was the right path. But I persisted and slowly a picture was unfolding, a story:

Imagine you’re on a demanding (but oh so, thrilling) mission-driven expeditionexpedition. Where it be solo, with your team, stakeholders, you name it. You wouldn’t just want a map—you’d want an experienced guide to walk alongside you. Someone who listens to your needs, honoring your goals, and helping navigate the twists and turns in real-time. That’s what Fractional Operations is all about. Unlike traditional business consulting, where you might get a strategic plan handed over to you with a polite “good luck,” Don’t get me wrong, there are great benefits to business consulting, some of which I also offer. Fractional Operations is more of a hands-on partnership. I’m not just advising from the sidelines; I’m right there with you, walking the path, ensuring your operations are in harmony with your mission every single day.

And that lightbulb moment helped me discover something. For years, I had been stepping into this role without even realizing it. Leading teams, optimizing workflows, and aligning operations with strategic goals—all while juggling other commitments, much like a Fractional COO or Director would. It turns out, I’ve been living this “fractional” life before I even knew it had a name.

Exploring Fractional Operations. Together.

Having a Fractional Operations Partner is like having a part-time powerhouse on your team. You bring in a seasoned leader—like a COO or Director—on a part-time basis to drive growth, optimize processes, and lead teams. This works well for organizations not ready for a full-time executive but need the expertise.

You might be an SME, a purpose-driven NGO, or a visionary with big dreams needing help to turn them into reality. Maybe reality is already in play but demands are starting to stack up, and the burnout is looming on the horizon. That’s where I come in. I offer the strategic insight and operational oversight you need, without the full-time commitment that comes with hiring a permanent executive. In other words, you get the best of both worlds: expert guidance tailored to your unique needs and the flexibility to scale as you grow.

Who TF is Fractional For?

Fractional Operations isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a powerful solution for organizations at key stages of growth. If you’re an SME struggling with outdated processes but not quite ready to commit to a full-time COO, Fractional Operations can bridge that gap. For NGOs looking to scale while keeping overhead low, this approach offers the expertise needed without the financial burden of a full-time hire. And if you’re a visionary entrepreneur with big ideas but need hands-on help to execute them while staying aligned with your mission, Fractional Operations provides the strategic guidance and operational leadership to turn your vision into reality.

And let’s call out another perk—remote + flexible support. Since 2020, we’ve seen that online and remote work is not only doable, but functional. This means you don’t have to worry about office space, or the expense of a private office. That said, I loved every single one of my 6 trips to Switzerland last year. Supporting the onsite teams, providing hands-on training, and building deeper relationships with the service providers + volunteers. Having that additional support offers invaluable flexibility.

If any of that sounds like you, then Fractional Operations might just be what you’ve been looking for.

Why I’ve Been Doing This All Along

When I first started out, I didn’t set out to become a Fractional Operations leader. I was focused on helping businesses streamline, optimize, and scale. But as I dug deeper into the needs of my clients, I realized that what they needed wasn’t just advice. They needed someone to walk with them, to help them navigate the complexities of growth, and to do so in a way that was aligned with their values.

And from a purely selfish point of view, I am ridiculously passionate about providing the strong operational foundations to bring visions to life. I’m in awe of those creatives, those visionaries, that see a future world made better. And damn it, I want to help make it happen. This is how I function at my best.

And that’s what I’ve been doing for the past three years—acting as a partner, a guide, and a strategic ally. Whether it was leading an international team remotely for a global non-profit or helping a start-up streamline its processes, I’ve been living the fractional life without even knowing it.

So, what is Fractional Operations? It’s Where I Thrive—and Where You Can Too

Fractional Operations isn’t just a service; it’s a mindset. It’s about being fully invested in your success, even if I’m not there full-time. It’s about bringing my experience, my passion, and my strategic insight to the table, and working alongside you to turn your vision into reality.

If you’re feeling the pull to elevate your operations without the commitment of a full-time hire, maybe it’s time we had a conversation. Whether you’re ready now or just curious,  the right support makes all the difference—and I’m here to help you find that difference.
